You toss three coins together. Heads counts three, tails counts two — so any toss totals six, seven, eight or nine, and each total draws one line of your hexagram:
Six tosses build six lines, always from the bottom upward, and those six lines are your hexagram — one of sixty-four. The sixes and nines are the changing lines: the places where your situation is already in motion. Change them all at once and a second hexagram appears, which the tradition reads as what your moment is turning into.
This is why the oracle has never really been about fortune. It answers a narrower and more useful question: what kind of moment is this, and what does moving well within it look like?
More readings go wrong at the question than at the coins. The I Ching answers questions about the character of your situation, and it answers them well. Ask it to name a date or a winner and it will still reply — but the reply will be a shape you have to force onto your life.

A casting hands you up to three things, and they are read in this order.
The primary hexagram is where you stand — the shape of the present moment. If no lines changed, this is the whole of the answer, and the reading is a steady one: the situation is what it is, and the counsel applies plainly.
The changing lines are the moving parts. Each has its own text, and each speaks to a specific pressure inside the situation. When several lines change at once, the tradition weights the lower ones as what is already underway and the upper ones as what is arriving.
The resulting hexagram is not a forecast. It is the direction the present is leaning — what this moment becomes if its motion continues. Read it as a tendency you can work with or work against, never as a verdict.

Some questions deserve a better answer than an oracle can give, and the Oracle will say so rather than improvise.
